It has been a busy and cold week, but we have finally made it to the weekend and now we are looking at an even busier weekend! At least it is supposed to get warmer this weekend. Since it is Friday it is time once again for yet another edition of the AWMD Friday Free For All. This is the only time of the week when our arguewithmydad.com readers can control the topic(s) for discussion. All you have to do is get someone else to respond to your suggested topic and then the floor is yours. Don’t be shy and don’t hesitate. Although it is Friday, I have decided to forego our usual Friday Free For all policy and provide some of my thoughts on the Mid-term elections that we just had on Tuesday as well as some interesting stories that broke today. I hope that you find it interesting or disturbing. Either way, let’s hear from you!
It was refreshing to read about Republican Senator Elect Dan Coates from Indiana who seems to agree that the filibuster rule has been misused and should be altered or changed in order to give every issue an up or down vote. “Mr. COATS: I think what we need is the opportunity to debate and have an up-or-down vote on every issue. Filibustering the motion to proceed -that is, we can’t even go forward and talk about an issue without overcoming or without gaining a 60-vote majority for it – I would support removing that provision. I think the American people deserve to have the issues debated regardless of which side they’re on, so that they are fully aware of what their representatives and senators are voting for and voting against.” http://thinkprogress.org/2010/11/05/coats-filibuster/ It should be noted that Mr. Coates was a Senator back in the 1990′s and just won his election to return to the Senate from the State of Indiana. I have to take my hat off to Sen. Elect Coates. He is bucking his party even before he gets sworn into office. I just hope that he keeps his word and works to change the rules to remove the filibuster. Since the Teapublicans have abused the filibuster and have set records in misusing it, it will be refreshing to see a Republican join the fight to end the abuse.
