Argue With My Dad

It has been quite a while since I have posted, but the election news last night got my juices flowing again.  It was refreshing to see that a majority of Americans really did believe that the Romney/Ryan ticket was not in theirs and the country’s best interests.  Several notable Teapublicans were shown the door by the voters, including my current Congressman, Joe Walsh, who lost to Tammy Duckworth in the race in his new district.  The State of Illinois and the country are better off with the loss of Mr. Walsh.  He was a stain on our democracy and firmly in the pockets of corporate interests.

With the reelection in hand, it was interesting to see that the Teapublicans were back to their “bipartisan” ways.  The news from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was basically that compromise means that you agree with us!  Where have I heard that before??  President Obama has a difficult job ahead of him because I believe that the Teapublicans will dig in their heels and refuse to compromise in the true sense of the word.  With that being said, President Obama has to tell the American public the hard truth about the Teapublican form of compromise.  He should sit down with them and insist that the Television cameras should be part of the meeting and make McConnell and Boehner sweat when they return to their “tax cuts for the wealthy are necessary for the economy to continue to improve” lie.  The whole country will be watching.

It was also a pleasure to see Romney and Ryan go down to defeat because of the hundreds of millions of dollars that corporate interests spent in trying to buy the election.  With the fiscal cliff approaching, President Obama will need to strike a deal with the Teapublicans, but he once again needs to do that in full view of the American people.  No back door deals with the Teapublican leadership.   Their intransigence must be exposed to the sunlight so the American people can witness their continued attempts to sell the country to corporate interests.  Yes, Sen. McConnell and Speaker Boehner, elections do have consequences.

One more thing.  In any dealings with the Teapublicans, President Obama must remind them publicly that Social Security has not added one cent to the deficit and does not need to be cut in order to deal with the debt.  While they are at it, Obama can simply suggest that removing the income cap from the Social Security tax will insure that Social Security will continue to help Americans secure their retirements for 50-75 years.  While he is at it he can remind them that Americans did not vote for turning Medicare into a voucher program.  Congratulations President Obama and Vice President Biden, but don’t forget that the people who supported you and gave you Four more years are not corporations, but average, every day Americans.

The first suggested topic for discussion involves an announcement made by the Obama Administration. “Today, in a huge victory for women’s health, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced that most employers will be required to cover contraception in their health plans, along with other preventive services, with no cost-sharing such as co-pays or deductibles. This means that after years of trying to get birth control covered to the same extent that health plans cover Viagra, our country will finally have nearly universal coverage of contraception.”  Think Progress  (more…)

Most of us who have been watching the Teapublicans in their attempt to push through their radical agendas, did not see the latest extreme attempt by Senator Jim DeMint coming. It seems that Sen. DeMint has been busy trying to push an anti-abortion amendment onto a totally unrelated bill. (more…)

We have all heard the claims from so-called progressives that they can’t vote for Obama in 2012 because of his failures. Some real, some imagined. They bristle when anyone suggests that he is far from perfect, but he is heads above any announced Teapublican candidate. One of the main reasons why none of the Teapublican candidates should be acceptable is because they will all continue the Teapublican war on women! (more…)

The first thought that comes to mind today is the news that Amanda Knox’ conviction in Italy was overturned by an Appellate court. Big news if you were following the debacle that they call justice in Italy. (more…)

I have to hand out some kudos first to President Obama for finally drawing a line in the sand when it comes to requiring tax increases for the wealthy and corporations. The response from the Right as well as some Blue Dog Dems is a sure sign that Obama is on the right track. (more…)
